Butter Beans

OK, I realize this sounds like a strange topic for a blog. I love to watch the cooking channels and as I sit and watch Chef Vivian shell butter beans, it makes me think how therapeutic such a task can be on many levels. First, you are at one with nature, taking something that someone has grown with their very hands and putting your hands to it. And you are preparing for a meal – probably with your family. Then, you are taking the time and care to cook a natural, healthy gift from the earth for yourself and someone else. I’ve always said that meditation has many forms. It can be silence, music (playing or listening to), dancing and now I’m going to add shelling beans (or even cooking in general) to that list. Sometimes it can be a very simple thing like shelling beans that helps us relax and re-direct our focus.
